If you already sent money

Speed matters, but there is no guaranteed outcome. Contact the payment provider through a trusted channel, ask what options are available, and do not pay anyone who promises recovery.

Return to start

Right now

Make the next call safely

  • Stop communicating with the sender and do not approve another payment.
  • Call the bank, card issuer, wire service, gift-card company, payment app, or exchange through its official channel.
  • Tell the provider it was a suspected scam and ask what protective, dispute, cancellation, or recall options exist.

What to gather

Make the provider’s review easier

Payment facts

Date, approximate amount, method, recipient name, transaction ID, confirmation number, and whether it is pending.

Contact facts

Phone number, email, username, website, profile, or account used by the sender. Do not contact them again to collect details.

Timeline

Write what happened in order: first contact, promises, payment request, what you shared, and what happened afterward.

What to say

Payment-provider script

I believe I was the victim of a scam. A payment was sent on [date] for approximately [amount] using [payment method]. The transaction or confirmation number is [number]. Please tell me what protective, dispute, cancellation, or recall options are available. I will provide sensitive details only through your secure process.

Payment-specific reminders

Choose the safest official route

Card

Use the number on the physical card or official statement. Ask about fraud protection and dispute options.

Bank transfer or wire

Call the sending bank or wire service immediately. Keep the receipt and confirmation details.

Gift card

Keep the card and receipt. Contact the card company using its official site. Never send another code.

Payment app or crypto

Use the app, exchange, or wallet provider’s official support path. Preserve usernames, wallet addresses, and transaction hashes.

Over the next few days

Watch for the second scam

  • Ignore “recovery agents” who contact you unexpectedly.
  • Review statements and account alerts from trusted channels.
  • Change passwords if you reused them or shared them.
  • Use official reporting links on Training.

Keep expectations honest

A provider may not be able to reverse a payment, and cryptocurrency or gift-card payments can be difficult to recover. GuardianLight cannot determine the outcome or contact the provider for you.
